Atelier Zuhâl produces internationally recognised organic textile art – a first for Australia.
Zuhal’s rugs are felted, stitched and embroidered from luxury raw materials and fibres such as silk, alpaca & merino that have Global Organic Textile Standards (GOTS) certification, a recognised leading standard for quality assurance in organic textiles manufacturing in the world. Atelier Zuhal’s studio’s organic integrity is not only thoroughly checked by GOTS, but subject to annual testing.
Though incredibly time consuming, Zuhal loves being involved in the process from beginning to end. She carefully cleans the batches of certified organic merino and alpaca wool when it arrives rough and raw ‘from the paddocks’.
She washes the fibre over 10 stages and towel dries it before putting it out in the sun on her Perth bush property. After this, she stores the fibre, fleece and wool in bags before preparing it for the carding process of spinning it into yarn (for the rug patterns) or felting.
Only then, does the creative work begin.
